About
Pyroga ceramic studio is located in Akadimia Platonos, Athens. A limited production of functional and decorative ceramics is created, as well as artworks that have been presented in various art exhibitions. My works can be purchased through the shops of Benaki Museum and the Museum of Cycladic Art. They are also available through etsy.com-pyroga and through my online shop.
As my background is design and my curiosity inspires exploration I tend to be somewhere between art and design.
My main interest is listening to the nature of the materials. This approach develops my work, teaches me new methods and gives me will to continue. I see ceramic material as the final destination of clay’s travel to become something else. Where I interpret the different phases in ceramic art as the process of traveling and the result as the final destination: Clay becomes plastic when mixed with water; it becomes firm when it dries; it occurs permanent physical and chemical transformations when be fired. This plastic soil could be really flexible and tolerant and you can push it towards your direction.
But why not try listening to it? Why not try working with respect for the nature of the materials, by offering them a ”controlled freedom” and leaving them to follow their cycle of life.
I have always been fascinated by travelling, by the unknown and by nature. In ceramics I have discovered something similar. Travelling across ceramics is unlimited and I can always dream about new explorations. So, sometimes when I open the kiln, I could become disappointed, but at the same time the opening of the kiln is one of the most charming moments in ceramics. In reality these unpredictable ”mistakes” that can occur are the ones that develop my work and inspire me to open up to new techniques and experimentation
I was first introduced to ceramics in 2004 during my studies of decorative Arts and Design in Athens. In 2010 I moved to Oslo, where I became member of a ceramic workshop. There, I worked with stoneware and porcelain in functional objects. Soon I understood how challenging and charming was the field. I was inspired to experiment in forms and techniques. I became more curious and had more questions about ceramics. In 2014 I returned to Athens, attended courses of material technology of ceramics with Menandros Papadopoulos and I started my own ceramic workshop.
